Positive Psychology Coaching is a professional and collaborative relationship between a Coach and their Client. It is a relationship designed to empower emotionally and mentally healthy people to take initiatives in their lives to grow and create their desired change. Positive psychology is an applied science and an evidence-based methodology. Its focus is on what’s going well in a Client's life, rather than what’s wrong. Positive interventions are based on dynamic research on Courage, hope, happiness, strengths, gratitude, mindfulness, resilience and other aspects of human flourishing.

    Coaching is a process of self-discovery, self-reflection and self-creation.

You may have a goal that might require you to reflect on how you think and live right now. It might be a challenge that requires you to let go of something that has been part of your life for a long time. You might start something that is entirely new for you. It might be an idea of something you never considered before. A project you have been thinking about for awhile. Often the people I Coach are at a point in their lives where they feel "stuck". It could be a change in relationships, family life, a career change or an opportunity. You might want something more in life. Sometimes you just need to talk with someone who is trustworthy, trained and skilled at fully hearing you.

Change always requires the exercise of will. The will to accomplish your goal in the face of uncertainty and from an opposition that can be both internal and external. The will it takes to make that decision; now that takes Courage!

Change is an aspect of Coaching that might cause an element of fear or resistance to surface. Change about how we think, how we see ourselves, or how we think others see us might feel daunting. Change and Courage go hand in hand.

Coaching with Courage is all about boldly moving forward with grit in the face of change and the unknown. You are always in complete control of the whole process. That requires Courage, accountability, and above all, good Coaching.

Let’s do some great Coaching together!

Hello, and Welcome to my website and my electronic business card. I am glad you are here.

My name is David W. McQuarrie, and I am a Certified Positive Psychology Coach®. I work with a variety of Clients from doctors, lawyers and other busy professionals, small business owners, military personnel, artists and stay at home moms and dads. I Coach individuals who are going through a change in their relationships, family life, caregivers, and people considering a career change. I often work with Clients who feel that their life is on hold or feel stuck and unsure of where they want to go in life.

I also Coach men who are gay and coming to terms with their sexual orientation. It's an excellent opportunity to work with a Coach who is also a gay man. An opportunity to relax and know you are fully supported in our Coaching sessions. Knowing you have a Coach who can relate to your fear and apprehension, who has been there and who can help you move forward in achieving your personal and professional goals. Many of my Clients find that to be a valuable part of working with me.

I am proud that my Clients find me to be a trustworthy and professional Coach in all aspects of my practice!

Creating a safe and confidential space allows every Client the opportunity to be completely open in every session we work together. Confidentiality is critical to who I am as your Coach, and it speaks to the highest level of service I provide to every one of my Clients.

I invite you to take some time to learn more about me and the approach to Coaching that I have to offer you. You will be pleasantly surprised. You will not find any annoying pop-ups trying to sell you something. This site is an opportunity for you to learn more about who I am as a man, a Coach, and the unique skills I have to offer you as a Client. If you have any unanswered questions, or would like to explore this opportunity.

Positive Psychology Coaching is a profession that is profoundly different from the therapeutic based models which require a Medical Degree or Licensing in the field of Psychotherapy. I am not a Medical Doctor (M.D.) nor am I a licenced psychotherapist. It is critical that I make that very clear from the outset. I follow the Code of Ethics of both the International Coaching Federation® (ICF) and the International Association of Coaching® (IAC). I follow the “Best Practices for Professional Coaches” of the School of Coaching Mastery® (SCM). I am a member in good standing with all three of these organisations for 2016. Please make sure whoever you choose to work with fully discloses their qualifications and limitations.

The Medical Model

Psychiatrists, therapists and councillors deal with mental illness, healing pain, dysfunction and conflict within a patients life or a relationship between two or more people. The focus is often on treating the mental illness, providing coping skills and resolving difficulties arising from the past which impairs their emotional functioning in the present.

As a Positive Psychology Coach I work with Clients one on one, or in small groups. My Clients are emotionally and psychologically healthy people.
Stacks Image 12691

Consultant or Mentor

Consultants and Mentors are experts in their field who are hired to fix, improve productivity, and profitability within a particular business or industry.

As a Positive Psychology Coach, I work with Clients who aren't hiring me to fix anything. My Clients hire me to help them get clear about where they are right now, and more importantly, to help them create a goal they want to achieve. I'm not the expert in their lives. I'm an agent of change in one sense. I use science-based tools to help my Clients get the result they want.
Stacks Image 12693

Sport or Athletic Coach

Sports coaches are hired by institutions and major league sports teams for their expertise in a particular sport. Sports coaches work with teams or individuals who are highly conditioned athletes. Their mandate is to help the team win every game.

As a Positive Psychology Coach, my Client and I work to create the space where they can become more self-aware of what they need, what they value and ultimately to use their unique strengths to achieve their individual goal in their unique way. Now that’s a winning combination.

My name is David W. McQuarrie, and I'm a Certified Positive Psychology Coach®.

I successfully completed a year long specialized training program in Positive Psychology Coaching through the School of Coaching Mastery, taught by Julia Stewart, MMC, CiPP, (PhD candidate). This program is approved by the ICF (International Coaching Federation) for 125 Coaching Specific Training Hours (ACSTH). Meaning it has been thoroughly reviewed by the ICF.

On a more personal note. I’m a 53-year-old single gay man who loves Coaching. I also have a deep love for helping other people live full, happy and satisfying lives too! ADD (Attention Deficient Disorder) is part of who I am. My ability to use my ADD as a positive attribute in my life has made me a stronger and more creative man.

If I'm not in Home Depot (I've converted all my conventional incandescent lighting over to LED lighting, and what a difference in the quality of light inside and out, plus it’s cut my hydro bill in half. I highly recommend switching over) you might find me out looking at the latest electronic device, gadget and anything made by Apple Inc. I'm a self-confessed AppleHead. I love all things Apple. They just work! I strongly believe in community service. I regularly volunteer at my local hospital. I also sit with palliative care patients.

My love of art is sometimes overwhelming. I love the amazing feeling you get when you find a piece that speaks to your inner heart and soul. It’s not uncommon for me to get lost looking at a painting or some great photography. I need more wall space I’ve been told. I particularly like the Thompson Landry Gallery in Toronto, Canada.

I'm a huge animal lover, and I care deeply about their welfare. On the topic of sports, I'm an NHL (National Hockey League) Toronto Maple Leafs fan. One day we will win the Stanley Cup again. I hope I'm still alive when it happens, though. I'm also a huge CFL (Canadian Football League) fan. Of course, I root for the Toronto Argonauts (and secretly for the Edmonton Eskimos). I also love photography, painting, exploring, gardening, and entertaining. I'm truly a man who loves life and helping people. I thoroughly enjoy talking with people. It’s amazing what you can learn when you listen to someone speak!

Music is another passion of mine. When I’m not Coaching a Client, I always have some music playing softly in the background. The piano and violin speak to my soul. However, I'm not limited to just the classics. Jazz and countless other genre are in my music collection.

I believe in lifelong learning, and I'm an avid reader. I'm fascinated by the brain. The topics of Neurology and Psychiatry are of great interest to me. However, I am neither a neurologist or a psychiatrist. Brain research continues to uncover new and critical understandings of how we think, function and process information. Another reason why Positive Psychology Coaching is so exciting to me. It's an applied science that is continually evolving.

Positive Psychology Coaching has the potential to change someone's life. However, you need to make sure you are working with a Coach who is properly trained and qualified to journey with you. There's nothing like the feeling of joy I get when my Clients reach their goals. It’s a huge part of why I love coaching with my Clients. They get it too!

Strengths and Values and Me.

I would like to share with you a part of my life story which may help you get a sense of the type of man I am.

At one point in my life, I was a seminarian studying to be a priest in the Roman Catholic Church. Oddly enough, Coaching and the priesthood share a similar set of skills, strengths and values. I am blessed to have many of them. They help me be a more effective Coach.

It is funny where life takes you if you let it.

In Positive Psychology Coaching we draw on science-based tools developed from dynamic research being done in Positive Psychology.

The Clifton StrengthsFinder assessment is one of these tools. Clifton’s Survey measures 34 Signature Strength Themes to help determine what an individual's dominant character strengths or traits are.

I completed this assessment on January 13, 2015, as part of the Certified Positive Psychology Coach® program with the School of Coaching Mastery. Here are my top five most dominant Signature Strengths.

1 - Empathy - You can sense the emotions of those around you. You can feel what they are feeling as though their feelings are your own.

2 - Developer - You see the potential in others. Very often, in fact, the potential is all you see. In your view, no individual is fully formed.

3 - Connectedness - Things happen for a reason. You are sure of it. You are sure of it because in your soul you know that we are all connected.

4 - Individualization - Your Individualization theme leads you to be intrigued by the unique qualities of each person.

5 - Responsibility - Your Responsibility theme forces you to take psychological ownership for anything you commit to, and whether large or small, you feel emotionally bound to follow it through to completion.

The results of this assessment were a reassurance that I am using my unique skills, strengths, and values in a fundamentally helpful and insightful way. Coaching for me feels completely natural. In fact, Coaching for me is a real vocation. It’s my life purpose and what I was created to do I believe.

Let’s talk a bit about Values.

Our values serve as a compass pointing out what it means to be true to oneself. When we honour our values on a regular and consistent basis, life is good and fulfilling. Values are the things that you believe are important in the way you live and work and make important decisions.

My Core Values are expressed in the choice of words that are in no particular order. Love, respect, relationships, compassion, Courage, honesty, wisdom, humility, empathy, developer, connected, individual, responsible, truth, trust, freedom, learning, curiosity, growth, faith, authenticity, family, beauty, fun, working, profession, connection, fairness, sharing, playfulness, and adventure.

Summing it all up.

I have shared my top five personal Strengths and my Core Values. In providing you with this insight into me, it is my hope you will identify with some elements of me as a Coach and as a caring man, and recognize why this combination can be a huge personal benefit to you in a Coaching relationship. We each have unique skills and life experience which we draw on in our day to day life. Coaching is a skill set that allows me to do what I do best, and that’s connecting with my Clients, clarifying and defining what my Clients want and need, and ultimately facilitating the creation of the path to their goals.

My Coaching Philosophy is the belief that every Client I work with can achieve their goals, overcome their obstacles, be resourceful, and have the answer. I see my Clients as being whole, complete and perfect, in every aspect, of every Coaching session we work together. I believe that each of us has the wisdom and Courage to make our life what we want it to be.
David W. McQuarrie CPPC®
What does that mean?

When we work together in a Coaching session. I have no preconceived idea about who you are. No limiting beliefs which could hold me back from seeing your greatest potential, and believing in your ability to achieve whatever it is that you want to accomplish. Most importantly though, is my genuine belief that you will be successful in this Coaching journey. Now you can’t put a price on that!

Positive Psychology is the scientific study of the strengths that enable humans and organizations to flourish. Positive psychology differs from historical psychological approaches because of its unique emphasis on the empirical study of human flourishing. While the study of psychology has traditionally focused on improving the human condition by identifying and relieving what is negative in life, positive psychology complements this approach with a focus on strengthening what is positive.

Positive Psychology Coaching is a Professional and Collaborative Relationship. It’s about living in the moment, with an eye to the future. It’s forward thinking, and action driven. It's discovering and overcoming limiting beliefs and barriers we impose on ourselves. It takes both concrete actions and Courage to stay focused on what you want out of life. Coaching is creating. That’s one of the aspects of our journey together. It is also one of the reasons you hired me. And I appreciate that very much.

Coaching is not a simple conversation between two people. Coaching is a facilitative process, a transformational conversation. It is creative, with a support system for growth and change. It is all about you!

You make all the decisions, and you are in complete control of the process. You choose the path that feels right to you.

It is critical for you to understand that Coaching with me requires real effort on your part in every session. It may be an insightful conversation at times, and that’s great if you find it helpful. However, I have not been successful as your Coach unless you have committed to, and have taken action, made a change, or done something to move forward towards your goal.

Each coaching session focuses on these three key factors that I have termed "MAC".

Making and maintaining a personal connection based on trust and mutual understanding.

Active and empathic listening. Making sure I hear and understand you, and the Coaching agenda is based on what you want to work on.

Creating space, the steps, and the actions that will help you successfully create your personal and professional goal.

I hope this helps you understand how I successfully Coach every one of my Clients.
